The Standard and Poors 500
The Standard & Poors 500 is a market-valued index, sometimes referred to as a capitalization weighted index. Each stock in this index affects the total in proportion to its market value. The S&P 500 is one of the best indicators of overall market direction. The 500 stocks in this index have a tendency to rise when added to the S & P, perhaps due to the index funds that have to buy the stock to match the index.
